OMG BBD EGT!!

Well I just got back from deer camp, I had a great time with friends. We ate some great food, relaxed, laughed and even took a couple of deer.

I want to write about something most of you, I know I didn't do until this year and that is texting on your phone while you are hunting.

I know what you're thinking, texting is for teenagers, right? WRONG!

This is a great tool for out in the field, it is quiet. We used to use walkie talkies, They are loud, they could easy spook game and then if you have someone on your frequency, well, it can be down right annoying. When I was at deer camp my buddy Jason alerted me that a nice 8 point was coming from the southwest over to me. I scanned the area and sure enough I seen him, well his antlers at least, there was a ridge that was blocking me to see him, he did this while there were does in my area. If he would of used the walkie talkie it might have alerted the does and they could of left.

You can also text your buddy if he is in the next county over, or even in a different state to see how he is doing. Chico and I do this alot when we aren't hunting together. It beats playing a hand held game like Yahtzee or read a book to pass the time, because you can pause and scan the field at anytime.

Here are some tips on using your phone in the field:

- Put all your phone settings on vibrate or silent.
- Don't use your phone in the morning or evening when it is getting dark, the light might alert the game to where you are at.
- invest in those gloves that have a removeable shooting finger or mittens that flip up. It's hard to text with gloves on.

I wrote done some texting lingo so you can shorten the conversastion and you can scan the field more:

1. ADN = Any Day Now
2. AYS? = Are You Serious?
3. BBD = Big Buck Down
4. BRB = Be Right Back
5. IDK= I Don't Know
6. IRL = In Real Life
7. ISO = In Search Of
8. JK = Just Kidding
9. K = OK
10. L8R = Later
11. LOL = Laughing Out Loud
12. MYOB = Mind Your Own Business
13. NIMBY = Not In My Back Yard
14. NP = No Problem
15. NW = No Way
16. OIC = Oh, I See
17. OMG = Oh My Gosh
18. OMW = On My Way
19. POV = Point Of View
20. RBTL = Read Between The Lines
21. STBY = Sucks to be You
22. SWAK = Sealed With A Kiss
23. TTYL = Talk To You Later
24. UT? = You there?
and the best one
25. EGT = Eating Good Tonight!

So ditch those walkie talkies and get some advice from your kids about texting. It will be quieter and it will give you and your kids something to talk about!

I forgot about 1 more acronym, a very important one... ptp= pass the potatoes!

***NOTE: it is legal to use electronic devices while hunting game in the State of Michigan. Check your state's rules and regulations to verify if electronic communication devices can be used as an aid in harvesting game. It is illegal in many states.***

The Beatles were wrong!

Well I not in the woods right now, peak rut time here in Michigan and I don't care. My family is getting ready to hunt something much more dangerous than a Kodiak. I am up at the hospital right now waiting while my mom receives a port to receive Chemotherapy.

My mom was diagnosed with Lung cancer.

We will beat it.

I don't need you to feel sorry for me and my family, because my mom is the strongest person I know. She has faced this beast three times and conquered it...3 times.

It really brings life into focus when something like this happens and I appreciate hunting even more. I realize the cycle of life means death, I know my mom will die someday, but not by this, and on her own terms.

I did almost lose my temper and had every ounce of Christian blood not to snap a doctors neck when my mom asked how long her treatment was and he said "six months to a year but some time people live longer." Yeah, he said that, I am still fuming about it.

My Mother fell into a depression state for about 2 days until she met with her doctor she beloving calls Dr. Sammy.

He reassured that it would be much longer than that. My mom got that spark in her eye I was waiting for, "GAME ON! I said, Now let's beat this thing!"

The Beatles wrote "all you need is love." They are wrong, you also need faith and hope.

Prayers are needed for my family, pity isn't.

Thanks for the rant, pass the potatoes.

honey dos

The "Honey-Do" List isn't very sweet and I think that is hurting our sport of hunting.

Let me tell you my theory on what it is and how it got started:

I beleive, buried deep in the fine print of every wedding vow is a clause that legally enables the creation of what is commonly known as the “Honey-Do” list. The “Honey-Do” list is a compilation of tasks, chores, repairs, and improvements that wives would like their husbands to accomplish, usually on the weekend or his hunting vacation.

It usually germinates from a single, innocent request placed upon the husband early in the marriage, which, in his desire to please his new bride, he nobly accepts as his duty. The problem is that once started, the “Honey-Do” list cannot be killed, and from that initial tiny mustard seed of a request will sprout a monster as thorny and unstoppable as an over-fertilized barbed wire bush.

The list will not go away, but can be controlled, here are three tips:

Get the list early and say "Is this all?" this usually stuns the growth of the list.
Try to do things before your vacation or the weekend, and tell your wife about it.
Buy your wife a small gift like flowers, this might help, in more ways than one!

DO NOT! I repeat DO NOT!! Leave the list until the end of your days of relaxation. this thing will grow faster than dandelions in May!

I hope this can help my fellow man on his quest to enable him to hunt and relax for at least a couple of days, thanks for the observation and pass those taters!

Simple Pleasures

One thing that is over looked about hunting is coming home, let me explain.

I was out hunting with Chico and it was nasty. Cold, rainy, windy, overall is was well crappy. I like some of those days. I know it isn't the best weather for deer hunting but I always look forward to these days because I know my wife will have a nice hot meal, one of the comfort meals that I love. She was making Grilled Cheese with Jalapenos and Tomato Soup. These simple things my wife does for me are often overlooked by me but it was brought to my attention when my wife called me on our way out of the woods. She wanted me to get milk on my way home. She told me what we were having. I got off the phone and Chico mentioned it that that sounded good and he was going have to wrestle something up. I didn't think much of it until I got home and smelled the soup, her giving me a kiss in a nice warm, dry home.

The hunter came home empty handed but the gatherer didn't care, the hunter was home safe, that is what she cared about.

This is a great end to a good day. Coming home to my wife, with a simple meal and telling her what happened and watching her smile, it wasn't a perfect ending to a hunt but it was a close second.

And yes, she adds milk to the soup, not water.

...but the kitchen sink!

Well, I had a GREAT night in the stand tonight, let me fill you in on what happened!

I arrived at "the Jungle" as I call it around 4:30 I had to work so I was a little late getting over there. I had to pick up my clothes and equipment from Compass since there are no "weapons" on my work site(WHATEVER...). I quickly sprayed down my clothes and equipment with DDW and away I went. I didn't take the camera or camcorder because I still need hangers to hang from the new stand.

I arrived at the stand and survey the area to see if there were any game in the woods, I make sure I don't spook anything so it doesn't cause a chain reaction and spook deer. I was hunting over a field I was on the west side, 400 yards was some hard woods and around 200 yards to the south of my stand was hard woods. There was not and I quickly secured my Hoyt to a rope harness and climbed up the ladder stand. I sat down and spun around and looked at the field a deer was a directly across the field around 350 yards away feeding. I didn't have my gloves or mask on. I waved to see if they have seen me, they didn't seem to care so I slowly put on my mask and gloves, put on my Hunters Safety System and pulled up my bow and nocked a arrow, now they just need to wander over here, what? It is only 400 yards away!

I was watching the deer feed and I looked to the south, TURKEY! I thought of Chico, he really wants a fall turkey, I think it the only thing he hasn't harvested this year. The deer were grazing going to the south and the turkey were grazing north. After a while the deer melted in the woods. I kept watching the turkey and then the deer appeared out of nowhere around 20 yards from the turkey. Well am I hope they encounter each other.

They did.

I was observing the two groups I pursue and enjoy digesting and then it happened.

One of the fawns got a little close to the group of turkeys, the turkey puffed up and the fawn starred it down. Then the turkey jumped up and kicked. The fawn bolted in the woods! I caught myself laughing out loud. I quickly composed myself and kept watching. The 2 groups went in the woods. Ten minutes later the same three deer came out this time they were on a trot and went around 70 yards in the field and turned around. I looked and there was a buck. It was nice to say the least, I didn't have my binoculars, I left them in my pack, but what i did see was his antlers were at least 4 inches past his ears, I checked my heart rate because my heart for some reason up by my ears, it was fine, a little fast but fine.

The buck came right after the doe, she took off, come on chase her over here...No luck. She went south and bolted in the woods. I hard some crashing and loud snapping of some branches all the while the two fawns kept feeding, 15 minutes later she trotted out and kept feeding, no more buck.

This happened again! same scenario, I thought I was watching a rerun on the outdoor channel. It was now getting dark and I look to the north two more deer were coming in but closer. I couldn't see what they were because of the dusk masking them. I quickly found out one might be a buck because again it chased off the doe. The three that were left kept grazing until dark. I couldn't see them no more so I secured my bow, lowered it down and unsecured myself from my safety harness and slowly climbed down my ladder stand. I look and seen something white and flickering where I last seen them feeding, I slowly retrieved my bow and quietly crawled out of the area.

It was a AWESOME night, reality T.V. at it's best minus the T.V.! I seen almost everything tonight but the kitchen sink, hence the name of the blog. I am really confident in this stand and only wish I can somehow close the gap where these deer are. I don't have access to the woods east of me. I am thinking on getting a doe decoy. If someone has any ideas how I can do this, e mail me. I don't hunt over fields so this is new to me. Thanks for time to read this, now pass the potatoes!

Vitimins for the hunter

I decided to blog on health and fitness. You need to have the right equipment in the field, practice your weapon of choice and be healthy for a fun experience. There is nothing worse than planning a hunting or fishing trip and waking up sick, not being able to endure the cold or not being prepared physically and mentally. You can have the top notch equipment and don't mean a thing if you are not at your full potential. There is a product I highly recommend the Sportsmen Edge, it is a multi vitamin that is for the outdoorsmen. I have been taking this product for a while and it works! I have noticed lower body odor, more tolerance to the cold and my immune system is better.
